Puff Those Feathers

Earlier this month I was watching a couple of Dark-eyed Juncos foraging around on the ground. I took a few pictures, and was about to drive on, when this little gal caught my eye. The first Greater Sage-grouse I've seen (to my knowledge).

This morning upon arriving to work, I heard that lovely, happy song of a House Finch. I didn't have any pictures of this bird, so I rushed inside to grab my camera, and by the time I got back out, two females had come to join this lone male. By the time I turned my camera on and got the settings squared away, seven or eight more had come to hang out. That finch invasion everyone keeps talking about in the east seems to have finally come to my neck of the woods.

Unfortunately I don't have a tripod here at work, so I did my best to keep the camera steady.

It's fun to have them here and singing again, but man is it cold. The weather station says it's 16F, but it feels more like...well, plain old ice. I stayed outside long enough for my face and fingers to freeze, about 2 minutes, then came back in and made a note to buy some seed and suet for these little guys.

OK. I am completely jealous over the Grouse. The snaps of the finches are great. I wish I had a better camera. sigh.
