SkyWatch Friday

I have a lot of family living in Idaho. Both my mom and dad have roots in Idaho. So we tend to go up quite often to visit family and for reunions. Last summer we went up for a reunion of family members I don't know well. But mom wanted to go, so to give her some company Kim and I went along.

It was a short, one day trip. But the company was nice, and the scenery was beautiful and rustic.

Lots of fields of corn, hay, and alfalfa. Old barns. Silos. Clean air. That occasional farm aroma. I had the chance to meet some great-aunts and uncles that I had never met before. And of course, a beautiful sunset through the clouds.

Sky Watch Friday

Winter scenery is so beautiful. Maybe it's the contrast of white against everything else, making the world seem more crisp and sharp.

I took these images last winter. I loved the pattern of the clouds over the mountains, and vast snow covered fields.

SkyWatch Friday

This past October I took a lovely trip with my roommate and her kids. We journeyed to California and spent 5 days playing around amusement parks.

On our way back from San Diego, we drove along the coast at sunset capturing these beautiful images.

These were taken while driving along at 70 mph.

SkyWatch Friday

I am pretty tired tonight and am also late for my guitar practice. I've found if I don't schedule myself a specific time play, I don't for weeks at a time, and then my fingers and mind have to re-learn everything. But I'll put if off for a few minutes more to post an image for SkyWatch Friday.

I have been very cold lately and have been longing to be in a warmer place. I often think of southern Utah, and so today's SkyWatch is from a trip I took a little over a year ago on my way down to Goblin Valley with my roomie and a good friend.

It was still cold the weekend we were there (it was in November), but this is such a nice warm picture, it makes me feel better. :)

Sky Watch Friday

On my drive into work this morning, I had a fabulous view of the morning sky. It's been a while since I have contributed anything to Skywatch Friday, but I hope to join once again more regularly. My excuse has been that I never have my camera with me when I see a great sky photo opportunity. But now I have a new phone, and this one has a much better camera than my last phone.

So today's Skywatch photo is brought to you thanks to a phone upgrade.

The sun was just coming up, and peaking through the clouds, turning the distant mountains a soft pink. It felt like an enchanted valley for a few short moments.

Sky Watch Friday

As much as I'm not ready for winter, it sure makes for beautiful landscapes! This is a view just outside the visitor center, looking out over the pond to the snow-covered mountains and the blue sky beyond!

SkyWatch Friday

I'd really like to get a good photograph of a Kestrel some day. In the meantime, this one will have to do, against gray skies.

SkyWatch Friday

I missed SkyWatch last Friday. So I am including several images from a quiet little walk I took around Silver Lake, in Big Cottonwood Canyon earlier this week. It was a beautiful, cool morning. Only a few people out and about. The aspens were golden, the sky was blue. And the air. What can I say about the smell and feel of the air? It just makes you want to breathe deeply.

SkyWatch Friday

It seems I've got a thing for sunsets lately. I love this sky. I was just heading out the door, on my way home from work, and this is the scene that met me. So I stuck around a little longer, enjoying the sunset, and the shifting clouds.

Even though pictures are nice, they generally don't do natural beauty justice. So get out there and enjoy some natural beauty. And then come back inside and explore the sky all over the world by visiting SkyWatch. You won't be disappointed.

SkyWatch Friday

Just as I returned home from my evening walk earlier this week clouds and fading light danced in the sky. I'm glad I was close to my camera. As I stood in my front yard taking these pictures, I noticed the neighbors kind of glancing around, wondering what had caught my attention. How often do I do that? Miss the beauty that is right in front of me.

There was a time not too long ago that I would stop along the road on my way to or from somewhere just to watch the setting sun. I often wondered if all those other people hurrying off to life's events even saw the wonder and beauty of what was going on right in front of them. I haven't done that in a while. I think maybe it's time to start up an old habit again.

SkyWatch Friday

I love a full moon. And a full moon over a favorite place is even better. It always amazes me how huge the moon looks when it is so low to the horizon, but a quick check, and sure enough, it is still only about half the diameter of my pinky held at arms length, just like when it's high overhead.

I didn't have a tripod, so its a bit blurry, but I still love this picture, and the memories it brings.

SkyWatch Friday

I'm a lot late in putting this up today. Friday just snuck up on me, and before I knew it, it was almost over. But I figured it's still Friday, and I have a sky photo.

Last weekend I took a quick trip with my roommate and mom to a reunion out of state. On our way home it got very stormy. So I set my camera on continuous shooting and just clicked away at the sky. Out of the hundreds of photos taken, I did get a few pleasant surprises.

This last one is my favorite. The yellow "laser" lights are street lights captured as we zoomed by. But what a flash of lightening!

SkyWatch Friday

"The sky is the part of creation in which nature has done for the sake of pleasing man".
John Ruskin

It just so happens that today's Nature Quote of the Day fits perfectly with SkyWatch Friday. I love how the sky is framed by these showy daisies. I had been helping with a project of weeding this flower bed. It is quite large, and there were a lot of weeds. I stood up from my hunched over position and saw this scene. I thought it was a perfect opportunity for a SkyWatch photo.

SkyWatch Friday

Ok, so you can't actually see the sky in this image, but you practically can. You know these cranes are making their way up to the deep blue reaches of the sky, as they continue their migration south.

SkyWatch Friday

I've been enjoying images of the sky all over the world for a couple of weeks now, so I thought it was about time to jump on board. There is something incredibly powerful about shifting your gaze upward.

And you are very often rewarded by unexpected events. This Osprey just pulled a fish out of the nearby pond, and a few swallows felt the need to chase him off.

Check out other SkyWatch images. They are pretty amazing.
