Pond Visitor

"Wendy, Wendy, come here quick!" was what I heard from my co-worker just around the corner in the visitor center lobby. You get a good view of our pond from out there, and she had seen something she'd never seen before.

I was excited too, because although they are pretty common in the area, Great Blue Herons don't usually make our pond a stopping location. I think it may have something to do with our pond being the only open water in the county other than the Provo River. The two main reservoirs in the area are still frozen over. I wonder where the Osprey are hunting.

I had no idea that great blue herons were anywhere around here - that's so cool!

What about the Hooded Merganser in the background of the first photo? He's not on your 2008 list yet either . . did you see him there? Or is that a Bufflehead?

Good eye, but ya, it's a Bufflehead. We have quite a few on the pond this time of year. Ring-necked ducks too.

I've never seen a Hooded Merganser, and would be thrilled to have one here. So I'm sorry it's not.
