Bird Photography Weekly

The visitor center here at work happens to be the site of many, unfortunate, window strikes. We've had many hit. For some, the results are deadly. For other, more fortunate birds, the results are a momentary daze. I am not sure what to do to cut down on these strikes. I have many, many window silhouettes I could put up, and want to put up. However, the park hires window cleaners to come quite often to ensure those windows are squeaky clean. I'm not sure they would stay put. I may give it a try anyway.

Mostly it's smaller birds that hit. But we have had birds as large as flickers leave feathers behind on the windows.

Today's addition to Bird Photography Weekly comes as a result of one of those strikes - this little Lazuli Bunting was lucky, and flew off not too long after I took this picture. These are one of the prettiest birds. I love that blue head.

If you enjoy birds, come and join Bird Photography Weekly, or just check out other blogs sharing their love of birds.

A lovely little bird - and I hope you find a solution to the bird strikes on the windows.

We have the same issue at my office. I have not seen the bodies, but I have seen the ghostly body and wing marks on the windows.

Oh no! I am sure you have looked into alternative window cleaning options. Perhaps we should start a movement toward silhouette rules for windows. There are many of us who could throw in here....

There are various sized black bird sillhouettes available as stick ons. They do keep other berds from breaking their necks or bouncing off the glass. I use them on the large panes in the porch, sunroom and car-port. They work quite well.

That's a beautiful bird. Glad it was fine :)

Would it be alright to post informational signage for your work on those windows? That should cut down on the window thumps - and maybe it would be okay with the organization too.
